Curatorial Statement
For our exhibition we have compiled artifacts that represent the social justice movement, specifically in regards to African Americans. Our chosen artifacts have been selected from the times of slavery, the Civil Rights movement, and the Black Lives Matter movement. We hope our exhibition shines a light on the view and story of the African Americans being portrayed in these artifacts.
When selecting our artifacts we chose to put a focus on oppressed African Americans throughout American history. It was important for us to have a diversity in the types of artifacts we chose. Both in the physical nature of the artifact, and what the artifact represents. The artifacts include paintings, oil on canvas, and photographs.
When we selected artifacts that date back to slavery, we wanted artifacts that portrayed African American’s lives and work during that time. We gave descriptions that were not jaded, but rather spoke the truth of how slaves were treated. For our artifacts that depict the Civil Rights movement we chose many artifacts that depict African Americans protesting for their rights and their lives. As for the Black Lives Matter artifacts we chose pictures that show the power of the protests across America in this past year.
As we rewrote our descriptions for each of our artifacts, we wanted to tell the story of the people being represented, but who didn’t have a voice at that time. We made sure to include the facts, thoughts, and deeper meanings of what was happening during these difficult times for the African American community. Our descriptions are raw and biased, but that’s what’s needed to portray the true story.
Our exhibition is here to bring light and justice to not only the artifacts but the people being represented. We hope our exhibition tells a story of how unequally African Americans have been treated in America, and that now is the time for change.
