For this project I did Black Lives Matter movement and compared to Blue lives matter movement and I took a look into both perspectives through one social media platform which was Instagram. I first explored by going to the search bar tab and looked up different account, hashtags, and any memes I could find about both. Some things I noticed about the Black Lives Matter movement there was more information about rallies and protests and a lot of posts about the different people that have died from police brutality and different things. While when I looked up different accounts for Blue Lives Matter and the hashtag blue lives matter there was more pictures of cops getting hurt and killed or just pictures of cops doing their jobs. Some relation I found between both is the awareness they bring to social media about the people that have lost their lives. I think users now in both perspectives uphold their awareness and the new information they put out every day. But some things I see that there moving away from is the politics of it. I noticed when I looked up the Black Lives Matter movement there was not that many posts about hating Donald trump and only loving Biden. Which a year ago that was all there was because they missed it with a lot more politics. I also noticed that Black Lives Matter perspective is more trending because even when I look up their hashtag it pops up with 8.4M shares with just Instagram and people are still posting today. Verses when I looked up the Blue Lives Matter hashtag there was only 49K shares and no one has used the hashtag in 4 days. You can see the differences of movements progresses over the months. In the reading we have read I have noticed they bring up a lot of the people that have passed from police brutality, for example in the reading “Social Media Giants Support Racial Justice. Their Products Undermine It.” It talks about the George Floyd killing and talks about how different people have contributed to help the cause. I also find it helpful when there’s more resources to help you understand everything and I liked the podcast we listened to called “How Facebook Is Undermining Black Lives Matter by The Daily” because even listening to that podcast gives you better understandings on like the BLM movement and the social media aspects of it. Especially when you read readings like “Why are memes of black people reacting so popular online?” It helps you understand how trends can hurt people’s feelings and so you can become more aware of that in the future and it just spreads more awareness. Going down two very poplar perspectives and movements on Instagram makes me see both sides of different things. But I’m glad I have classes like this one to open my eyes about these things.
